Murray Hill, New Jersey was once the lifeline for Union County. The railroad provided coal to Union County and shipped out the farming produce. Famous in the late 1800's as a major floral supplier, the entire area around the Murray train station was perfumed with the smell of gardenias and roses for years. The area was first settled as a farming community in 1720 and saw major skirmishes and battles during the Revolutionary War. George Washington's headquarters was located right in Union County.
Located about 25 miles from New York City and with easy access to Newark International Airport, Murray Hill is centrally located in one of the most populated areas in the northeast United States.
Much of Murray Hill was reapportioned to New Providence in 1809 but the historical train depot still stands and is a centerpiece for this community. Murray Hill is home to the New Jersey Youth Symphony and Bell Labs.
