The Township of Hillside, New Jersey has an elected government consisting of a mayor and a city council, and an active and involved community base. In the middle of a thriving metropolis, just minutes from Newark International Airport and about 25 miles from New York City, Hillside has managed to concentrate on their Little League Baseball and their strong family and religious life. The local community Foodbank for the Needy interacts seamlessly with this caring community. Hillside hosts the state's largest provider of donated groceries to charities. Up to 19 million pounds of food is shipped annually to 1,500 food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other programs in 18 counties. Many donate their time at the foodbank's main warehouse in Hillside (the largest food bank facility in the country). Donations by individuals and corporations must be sorted and packed for shipment (in their own fleet of trucks).
Originally occupied by the Algonquin India sub-tribe, Leni Lenape, Hillside's original colonists were Dutch until the 1660's when the English revived the faltering colony. Many Revolutionary War Battle sites are within minutes of Hillside, N.J.
